I’m not going to get into the specifics of how I came to the title of this blog, but let’s just say that a friend helped me out of a foundation issue by referring me to a store that could customize a solution for me. I had no idea such things were available…nor did it ever occur to me to ask if such a thing was possible.
Vague? Let’s say it like this- suppose you are a physician who wants to promote a service and you want to create a user-friendly Website, easy to find on the search engines and display exactly the information you want. Do you know how to go about starting?
Start here; that seems to be where everyone gets stuck. They don’t know where to start when it comes to communicating online (or making dinner- but that’s my husband’s problem and it’s for a different blog).
Information is power because it gives you options. In fact, the number 1 definition for power is the “ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something.” When you have enough information, you can begin to make choices, and when you make choices, inevitably things begin to happen; both good and bad.
In this era of SO much information (maybe TOO much- so much that we’ve even abbreviated for it, as in TMI) does everyone have this power? And with social media, where sharing and disseminating information has turned some people into commodities, is the power shared evenly amongst the broadcasters and the receivers? And sometimes, don’t Twitter and Facebook feel like high school? How many friends do you have? How many people are following you?
At the end of the day, the adage still stands- that’s why it’s an adage. Because all the information that we are bombarded with on a daily basis does create the ability to act and make choices. Sometimes the power is in knowing who to filter and who to listen to more closely. But it still positions us to act- and acting is the first step in starting. As with my vague example at the top- once my friend told me I could have a solution made for me, I was able to move forward quickly. I just didn’t even know where to start.
