What are we all doing on Twitter, Facebook, Digg, etc? Are we communicating or interacting?
Communication is about imparting knowledge. Interaction is about acting upon someone. In essence, one is active and one is passive. Yes, communication is critical so people can make choices. But interaction is where it’s at.
I was at a client’s office a few weeks ago and her husband happened to be there to take her to lunch. We got to talking and it turns out we’re both Advanced Web Professionals. We exchanged cards, set up a time to speak and had a meaningful 10 minute conversation about where business has gone with social media and the New Economy. It was an important interaction that spurred my thoughts into many different areas.
I’m not sure if I had seen a tweet from him about business and the New Economy that I would have reacted the same way. Even if I had an online conversation with him about it, in 140 characters or fewer, I’m not sure it would have had the same bite.
Maybe the true goal of social media is to get us communicating with lots of different people, so we can choose who we really need to interact with.
What do you think? Are you interacting or are you communicating?
